Focus on DHA, not cod liver oil
We explored the effects of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a fatty acid found in cod liver oil, on heart health after a heart attack, known as myocardial infarction (MI). Using both lab-grown heart cells and mouse models, we investigated how DHA might protect against heart damage following an MI.
Our findings revealed that DHA significantly improved the survival of heart cells under stress and reduced damage in mouse hearts after MI. It not only decreased the size of heart tissue damage but also enhanced overall heart function and lowered fibrosis, which is the scarring of heart tissue.
In addition to these protective effects, we observed that DHA boosted autophagy, a process that helps cells clear out damaged components, and reduced cell death. We further noted that DHA promotes this beneficial process through the activation of the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway, which is crucial for regulating cell energy and growth.
This study highlights the powerful cardiovascular benefits of DHA, suggesting that it could be a valuable component of heart health, particularly in supporting recovery after heart attacks.

We explored the effects of cod liver oil (CLO) on cardiovascular health in rats with diabetes, particularly how it might improve various related issues. In our study, diabetic rats were treated with CLO for 12 weeks and we compared their health with untreated diabetic rats.
Results showed that CLO treatment led to notable improvements. It helped prevent weight loss and completely corrected the abnormal lipid levels found in these diabetic rats. While it didn't fully normalize blood sugar levels, it did help control them partially, which is a positive step.
We also examined how CLO impacted the heart and blood vessels. To delve deeper into the mechanisms, we conducted an in vitro experiment where we treated endothelial cells with varying fatty acids.
Among these, only eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) stood out in diminishing the binding of human monocytes to the endothelial cells, especially when applied within a specific timeframe after stimulation. Moreover, we found that EPA decreased the expression of certain adhesion molecules on endothelial cells following inflammatory stimulation.
Overall, our findings suggest that cod liver oil could be a potentially valuable addition to heart health strategies, particularly due to its unique ability to influence blood vessel interactions without significant adverse effects.
